Foods for Special Medical Purposes (FSMP) are specially processed and formulated foods designed to meet the unique nutritional and dietary needs of individuals with restricted food intake, impaired digestion and absorption, metabolic disorders, or specific disease conditions. These products must be consumed under the guidance of a physician or clinical dietitian, either alone or in combination with other foods.

The new Food Safety Law, issued on October 1, 2015, explicitly stipulated that foods for special medical purposes (FSMP), health foods, and infant formula foods would all be regulated as "special foods." On March 10 of the following year, China released the Measures for the Administration of Registration of Foods for Special Medical Purposes, which officially took effect on July 1, 2016. Though comprising only 15 articles, the Measures were the first to flesh out the FSMP provisions of the 2015 amended Food Safety Law, providing concrete legal rules for the production, sale, and regulation of this category of foods. FSMP had finally come into their own in the Chinese market — and the greatest beneficiaries are the countless patients who depend on them.

On May 10, 2026, Aoungo International Trading Co., Ltd. signed a China master distribution agreement with RenaCare, a German brand specializing in medical foods. A 35-year-old German company, RenaCare focuses on developing kidney health supplements and renal medical foods, and has earned unanimous recognition from nephrologists and patients throughout Europe.
